Super Smash Bros 4 Release Date for Spring 2014 a Misquote, Nintendo Says

Super Smash Bros 4 was rumored to be coming out in spring 2014, according to a Nintendo executive from Germany, but now just a few days later Nintendo is saying it was a misquote.

Nintendo's Bernd Fakesch held an interview with Neckar-chronik.de earlier this week about upcoming releases for the company. In that interview, which was translated to English by GameSpot, Fakesch was quoted as saying the game would be arriving.

"For next spring two more big license games are also announced for our TV console with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros," read the quote.

A Nintendo representative contacted VG247 to inform them of the misquote. We would like to clarify that the speculation about a Spring 2014 launch date for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U was the result of a misquotation in an interview," they said.

Super Smash Bros 4's release date may have been unintentionally leaked on a retailer's website listing as well.

The website Newegg.com lists the Wii U date as December 31 2014 and the 3DS version of the game as being available on May 16 2014. See the listings here (3DS) and here (Wii U).

The characters confirmed for the game so far are: Mario, Luigi, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Pit, Olimar, Toon Link, Princess Peach, Sonic the Hedgehog, MegaMan, Wii Fit Trainer, and the Villager.

SSB4 Wii U is $59.99 and SSB4 3DS is $39.99.

Mario Kart 8 is still scheduled to be released in spring of 2014, and was previously connected to an April 25 launch date due to accidentally leaked newsletter by Nintendo.

According to Gamespot, Mario Kart Wii sold 34.26 million copies while SSB3 sold 11.49 units. Both of these games are expected to sell extremely well and help push the Wii U.
