'The Flash' Spoilers, Plot Rumors: Barry to Time Travel in Upcoming Episode

In an upcoming episode of "The Flash," Barry will have the chance to time travel, and he's going to have a difficult time dealing with it.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said, "There's an episode coming up where there is inadvertent connection to the Speed Force that results in probably our funniest hour as well as our darkest hour as the dangers of time travel come to light."

"It's a mashup between 'Back to the Future' and 'Terminator'—the good version of time travel and the bad version of time travel," he added.

"The Flash" star Grant Gustin told EW that the episode will also be influenced by the 1993 film "Groundhog Day" in which Bill Murray gets to relive the same day over and over again.

"It's a complete accident the first time [he time travels]," said Gustin. "It's really confusing because now we're playing timelines and we're having to shoot things a couple of different ways. It's like a Groundhog Day-type element. It's really funny and really exciting."

Grant said that at first, Barry won't understand what's happening and that he's the only one in the team who time travels. "He's not handling it incredibly well. It's freaking him out a bit."

Once Barry figures out what's happening, he figures that he can change what happened in the past and use time travel to his advantage.

"He realizes … 'this is an opportunity to change things with my family's past,'" said Gustin, "He doesn't know yet not to do that, but that's where Barry's at when he realizes what he's just learned that he can do, that he can maybe save his mom."

Meanwhile, fans of the show can also look forward to guest star Mark Hamill ("Star Wars") in a future episode. Hamill played the Trickster in the original "The Flash" TV series, and he will be reprising the role, playing an older version of the Trickster in the CW show.

"The Flash" airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
