Why We Shouldn't Seek to Hear God's Audible Voice

Unbelievers will never run out of arguments to criticize the Christian faith. "If God is all-powerful, why did He or didn't He...?" "If only God didn't..." Those are their usual lines as if to say they're smarter than the Creator. The Bible describes them as fools who have no interest in understanding and only want to air their own opinions (Proverbs 18:2–3).

One of their questions that challenge God's existence is why doesn't He speak directly to us the way we do to each other. They're asking why He doesn't reveal Himself to us clearly and audibly and suggest He could have more followers if only His booming voice can be heard.

The suggestion reeks of arrogance as it questions God's infinite wisdom. We are not in the position to question the ways of the Supreme God, much less deserve to be spoken to (1 Corinthians 2:16). On the contrary, we should be thankful to be given the chance to talk to Him and establish a relationship.

Another point to consider is that God is not in the business of pleasing man. Rather, it is the subject who should reach for the object of worship. It is only by seeking God that we can prove our love and devotion for Him. We may all be compelled to follow Christ if we hear directly from Him, but that would be akin to forcing us which is a violation of our free will.

By keeping His silence, God is giving us the choice whether to worship Him or not. Following Him would entail studying His word to determine what He wants us to do. People would be forced to worship God if He would reveal Himself visibly and audibly which is not what He wants.

There are those who claim to have literally heard from God but there is only one way to determine its veracity. Such a claim could be true only if the message audibly heard support the things written in the Bible. Anything that is contrary to the Word is not from God (John 4:1).
