Anglican Church in North America formed – June 22, 2009
This week marks the anniversary of the formation of the Anglican Church in North America, a denomination founded in response to the liberal theological direction of The Episcopal Church.
During a three-day gathering held in Bedford, Texas, that began on June 22, 2009, ACNA elected Bishop Robert Duncan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as its first archbishop and ratified a constitution and canons.
Drawing from congregations that have left The Episcopal Church, as well as the missionary efforts of Anglican denominations from Africa and South America, upon its establishment, the ACNA boasted approximately 100,000 Anglicans and 700 parishes.
Rick Warren, pastor of the California-based megachurch Saddleback Church and the bestselling author of The Purpose Driven Life, spoke at the inaugural assembly for ACNA.
“My heart is so full for you today,” he told those gathered in Bedford. “If we want God's blessing on ACNA, then we must make our agenda God's agenda.”
"If you want God's blessing on your ... communion, don't pray 'God bless what we're doing.' Instead, pray, 'God help us to do what you're blessing.’ … A great commitment to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission will grow a great communion."
