It's that time of year again. Temperatures are lowering, days are shortening, shopping is increasing, and all the holiday cheer is starting to surface.

Regarding the liturgical calendar, it is the season of Advent, which is the time of waiting for Christmas. Most just call it the Christmas season or, gasp, the holiday season.

Most important, it is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. While odds are slim that Jesus' actual birthday was December 25, it is nonetheless the date that both the Roman Empire and American Republic use to observe it.

So, in keeping with this time of waiting for the coming, here are five Bible passages germane to the season, whose reason is Jesus.

1. Isaiah 9:6

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

2. Micah 5:2

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

3. Isaiah 7:14

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."

4. Luke 1:26b-33

"God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.' Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.'"

5. Luke 2:10-12

"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.'"
