Jiah Khan Dead of Apparent Suicide After Failed Relationship, Audition

Jiah Khan, a famous Bollywood actress, was found dead in her apartment on Monday. Police suspect that the 25-year-old was upset over a failed relationship and took her own life.

Khan appears to have hanged herself late Monday evening; her mother found the body. There was no suicide note. Police have interviewed Khan's family and ex-boyfriend Suraj Pancholi, whom she dated for nearly a year.

"Jiah was said to be very possessive about Suraj. Last night they exchanged text messages on their cell phones. Suraj also sent her a bouquet which she did not accept," sources told NDTV.

According to the family, Khan became depressed after learning that her former boyfriend was in a new relationship. But she had recently suffered other setbacks as well. At a recent audition she was told she needed to lose weight.

Khan became famous with the 2007 premiere of the Bollywood film "Nishabd," which was loosely based on the classic novel "Lolita." She then went on to star in two huge hits "Ghajini" and "Housefull."

"Never seen a debutant actress with more spunk and spirit than Jiah when I was directing her in Nishabd. I don't know the reason what led to this but Jiah was very depressed about her career and scared for her future," filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma tweeted.

Fellow actors and actresses have reacted with shock to the loss of such a young star.

"Shocked n saddened to hear about Jiah Khan… Very disturbing… RIP… may her soul rest in peace," tweeted Shahid Kapoor. His message has been re-tweeted over 1,000 times; he is not alone in his grief.

Khan was born in New York, grew up in London, and then moved to Mumbai. It was in Mumbai that she became a star. Her legal name was Nafisa Khan, but she changed it to become more memorable. She lived with her mother and sister at the time of her death.
