Murder in Outer Banks Results in Arrest: Nathan Summerfield in Custody After 6-Week Manhunt
Nathan Summerfield has been found and placed under arrest for the murder of his ex-girlfriend following a 6-week manhunt.
Nathan Summerfield and Lynn Jackenheimer had been in an on again off again relationship when they decided to go on vacation in North Carolina for the Fourth of July weekend. A search for Summerfield was launched on July 8th after his brother called 911 and reported the alleged crime.
"My brother was in North Carolina with his ex-girlfriend and he came back and said he strangled her. He dropped his kid off and left," the brother stated in a recording of the 911 call.
The body of Lynn Jackenheimer, 33, was found six days later. She had been strangled to death and stabbed multiple times. Police discovered her body in a vacant lot in Frisco, N.C., about 25 miles from where she'd been staying with Summerfield. After a 6-week manhunt, the suspect is now in custody.
"The deputy U.S. marshals, deputy sheriffs and police officers, tracked him all over this country," U.S. Marshall Peter J. Elliott said according to Good Morning America.
He was discovered in a motel room in Medina, Ohio. Sightings of Summerfield had been reported across the nation. Officials stated that he was unarmed and did not put up a fight. He had signed into the hotel as Jay Summerfield, only changing his first name.
"All the SWAT teams came, and then they ran in room 211, told the guy to get on the floor and don't move," one of the motel maids said, recalling Summerfield's arrest.
Jackenheimer's father, Raymond Johnson, has expressed his relief and now hopes that justice will be served for his daughter.
"I'm glad he's caught," Johnson said. "It's his turn to pay for what he has done."
