Close to 300 Christian leaders from the tri-state area gathered Monday for the largest New York City meeting of pastors, ministry leaders, and youth pastors, of the year.

The "Pastoral Prayer Summit" will be held Jan. 23-25 at Tuscarora Inn in Mt. Bethel, Penn.

Prayer is important, according to Senior Pastor Roy Mansfield of Manhattan Bible Church in Manhattan, N.Y., who said he really appreciates the prayer conference and looks forward to it.

"If you think that we really need God, then prayer goes right alongside of that because it is through prayer that you connect with God," said Mansfield.

Manhattan Bible Church recently asked its congregants in what ways it could improve the church in general, and the answer that came back was "pray for us," according to Mansfield, who said he only expected feedback about structural changes.

According to a survey conducted by the Southern Baptist Convention concerning the top problems in America, the number one problem voted by 1,300 pastors in 2005 was the lack of prayer. The second was discipleship.

The "Pastoral Prayer Summit," sponsored each year by Concerts of Prayer Greater New York, includes general sessions interspersed with special meetings, such as women leaders, regional meetings, intergenerational dialogue, and a church multiplication prayer meeting.

Speaking are some of the area's most involved pastors and ministry leaders, including Pastor Bob Johansson of Evangel Church, Pastor Joseph Cortese of
Crossroads Tabernacle, Bishop Hector Bonano of The Missionary Church of Christ, Pastor Carl Johnson of Bethel Christian Church, Pastor Fred Provencher of Cornerstone Christian Church, and the Rev. Gary Frost, Director of Metro New York Baptist Association.
