Mary Adelia McLeod, the third woman to become a bishop in The Episcopal Church, but the first to have the responsibility of leading a diocese, died at the age of 84.

McLeod was elected diocesan bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Vermont in 1993, with her consecration taking place on All Saints Day of that year, and served in the position until 2001.

Episcopal Bishop Shannon MacVean-Brown, the current head of the Vermont Diocese, said in a statement this year that McLeod “was always encouraging to me.”

“I’m trying my best to continue her work of empowering and supporting lay ministry, promoting inclusion, strengthening our stewardship, improving transparency around our financial resources, and encouraging the ministry of women,” said MacVean-Brown.
