Demonstrators from the pro-Palestine encampment on Columbia's Campus barricade themselves inside Hamilton Hall, an academic building which has been occupied in past student movements, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 in New York City. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched around the "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" at Columbia University as a 2 P.M. deadline to clear the encampment given to students by the university passed. The students were given a suspension warning if they do not meet the deadline. Columbia students were the first to erect an encampment in support of Palestine, with students demanding that the school divest from Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war, where more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip. | Getty Images/Alex Kent

2. Trump threatens Hamas, strips federal funds from Columbia University

After meeting at the White House on Wednesday with eight Israelis who were held hostage by Hamas, Trump issued a pointed threat to the terrorist organization.

"'Shalom Hamas' means Hello and Goodbye — You can choose," Trump wrote on Truth Social, referencing a Hebrew greeting. "Release all of the hostages now — not later — and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you."

Trump also made good on his threat to stop federal funding for schools that permit "illegal protests" after anti-Israel protesters at Barnard College, an affiliate of Columbia University in New York City, invaded a campus building and injured a university employee.

The White House announced Friday that the federal government, led by the U.S. Department of Education and a task force to combat antisemitism spanning other departments, canceled approximately $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University "over its failure to protect Jewish students from antisemitic harassment."

"SHALOM COLUMBIA," read the White House announcement on X.
