President Trump on Thursday gathers allies to inaugurate the "Board of Peace," his new institution focused on progress on Gaza but whose ambitions reach much further. Around two dozen world leaders or other senior officials have come to Washington for the meeting -- including several of Trump's authoritarian-leaning friends and virtually none of the European democrats that traditionally sign on to US initiatives. | SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images
5. Trump hosts first Board of Peace meeting

Trump hosted the first meeting of his newly constituted Board of Peace Thursday. At the meeting, Trump described how member nations of the national body planned to contribute to relief efforts in the war-torn Gaza Strip, which has seen death and violence during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The president announced that Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait have all contributed over $7 billion to the relief effort while the U.S. has pledged $10 billion to the Board of Peace.

Additional topics discussed during the meeting included the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance raising $2 billion for the relief effort and Japan’s plans to host an aid fundraiser that nearby countries are expected to attend. Trump also detailed how member nations had committed to maintaining a military presence in Gaza in order to keep the peace in the region.

“Albania, Kosovo, [and] Kazakhstan have all committed troops and police to stabilize Gaza. Egypt and Jordan are likewise providing very, very substantial help: troops, training and support for a very trustworthy Palestinian police force,” he explained. During remarks at the meeting, the president of Indonesia pledged to send 8,000 troops or more to Gaza.
