The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees will continue their intriguing American League Championship Series on Sunday when Game 2 takes place at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers managed to get their noses in front following a tight, tense battle in Game 1 on Saturday night, and the Yankees will be keen to make an immediate comeback today. Game 1 was a double blow to the Yankees on Saturday night, as they lost 4-6 to go 0-1 in the series, as well as losing shortstop Derek Jeter for the rest of the postseason with a fractured left ankle.
Yankees' manager Joe Girardi will have to replace Jeter as well as think about shaking things up in his offense. Throughout the postseason the Yankees have struggled to get runs of the board. They have now scored more runs in the ninth innings and beyond than they have in the first eight innings of games in the postseason. Saturday night's Game 1 looked like it would be a relatively simple win for the Tigers as they held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. However, they let that lead slip in an extraordinary turnaround and it looked like the Yankees would pull off a shock win. However, despite blowing that four run lead at the end, the Tigers held their nerve to claim two runs at the top of the 12th inning, and the Yankees couldn't find a way back a second time.
The manner of that win will be a relief for the Tigers, and although will be disappointing for the Yankees, will have given them more hope than had they been swept aside 4-0.
But with the loss of influential captain Jeter, this series has swung firmly in the Tigers' favor, and it will take some big displays from the New York squad to win this one from here.
The Tigers will start Game 2 with Anibal Sanchez, who last pitched against the Yankees six years ago with the Florida Marlins. In that game he went 5.2 scoreless innings to help beat that Yankees side. However, that was so long ago not much can be looked into from that result.
Sanchez did well on his last road start against the Oakland Athletics in Game 3 of the ALDS. He conceded just two runs on five hits from his 6.1 innings, but could not stop the Tigers ultimately losing that game.
The Yankees must get a few other players getting on the scoreboard, and in their postseason only Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez have really impressed. The rest of the team must quickly find their punches or this series could be over quickly.
