'Good Omens' Release Date, Plot Rumors: Filming Begins; Miniseries Expected to Premiere in 2019

The humorous action-fantasy novel "Good Omens" co-written by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett is turning into a television miniseries.

Filming has finally begun this month, and the highly anticipated adaptation is set to premiere in 2019 — that is if Gaiman's "17 months" prediction on Twitter pushes through. This was his response when a fan asked if they all had to wait two years to see the miniseries.

The six-part series adaptation of Gaiman's novel is being co-produced by BBC Studios, Narrativia, and The Blank Corporation. It will be launched on BBC Two and Amazon Prime Video.

As to what fans are going to expect when the series lands on the small screens, Deadline reports that "Good Omens" will take place at a time when the Apocalypse is dawning and when humanity is about to face the Final Judgment. The forces of Good and Evil are taking their sides as the world is about to come to an end. And while everything seems to be going according to the "Divine Plan," an angel named Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and a demon named Crowley (David Tennant) do not look forward to the impending war.

The series also stars Jack Whitehall, Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, Sian Brooke, Nina Sosanya, Ariyon Bakare, and Ned Dennehy.

It has also been confirmed that Emmy Award-winning director Douglas Mackinnon, whose credits include "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," is going to direct and executive produce the series.

This was not the first attempt to adapt "Good Omens" though. Back in 2002, director Terry Gilliam tried to make a film out of it. He was able to complete the script, but due to the lack of funding, the film never materialized.

However, last year, Gaiman reportedly announced that he will be writing the scripts for the television adaptation of the novel that he co-wrote with Pratchett, who passed away in 2015. He decided to do this in his hopes of honoring a posthumous request from the deceased fantasy novel author.

Gaiman will also be serving as the showrunner for "Good Omens."
