HBO Announces Airing of Kit Harington's 'Gunpowder' Miniseries Next Month

"Game of Thrones" actor Kit Harington's latest television miniseries is headed to HBO.

In partnership with BBC One, the network will air the miniseries titled "Gunpowder," which is a three-part historical thriller based on the 17th-century events that led to Guy Fawkes Day, exclusively in the United States next month. Harington stars alongside Peter Mullan, Liv Tyler, Mark Gatiss, and more.

According to the announcement, the first episode of the show, which became a huge hit with BBC One viewers when it premiered in the United Kingdom last month, will debut on Monday, Dec. 18, at 10 p.m. ET on HBO. It will air for three consecutive days, with the third episode closing on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

The official synopsis for "Gunpowder" reads: "A committed Catholic at a time when Protestant England persecutes Catholics relentlessly, Catesby's refusal to abandon his religion brings him to the edge of financial, social and psychological ruin."

Harington plays the lead role, Robert Catesby. Mullan portrays Jesuit Father Garnet, while Tyler plays Anne Vaux, Catesby's cousin, who has growing suspicions about his activities. Gatiss, on the other hand, takes on the role of Robert Cecil, the king's spymaster, who hunts down, tortures, and kills priests.

Apart from headlining the series, Harington is also co-executive producing the "Gunpowder." What makes his involvement in the show even more interesting is that he is actually a descendant of the real-life Catesby.

"We are delighted to offer a platform for a project that is so close to Kit Harington's heart," said Kary Antholis, president of HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programming, in a statement, according to FOX News. "Kit's passion for and belief in 'Gunpowder' are evident in every frame of the miniseries."

"Gunpowder" will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, and HBO GO.
