'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' reboot news 2015: Women may be the center?
If anyone thinks of the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," the first thought conjured would probably be of the 2003 movie featuring Sean Connery, which was deemed disastrous in all parts. So, when a reboot for the film was officially announced in May, it expectedly got mixed reactions.
Collider reports that producer John Davis talked about his plans for the movie in the recent Television Critics Association tour. He opens up how he is aware on the skepticism around the reboot yet he thinks that they have found a way to make the story work and appeal to current audience. He is quoted saying, "Just by going back to the roots and making it authentic to what the fan base was really excited about. It's female centric, which I think is interesting. I love female characters, point-of-view characters in action movies. I thought Mad Max was great. I think you can always find a fresh way of doing something and going back to the basics. What is that people love? What is it that made them love the property in the first place?"
Davis' concept is overall interesting for fans of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's comic series; however, it also makes them wonder how it would be possible. For people who have seen the previous movie or has read the comics, they would also be well aware that in this "league," there is only one female character, which would be Mina Murray from the famous vampire novel "Dracula." It may become a bit of a stretch if the story would center only on her, which leads to speculation that new literary female characters may be introduced to fulfill Davis' vision.
The story of the comic series basically revolves around a group of Victoria-era literary characters trying to save the world. The unorthodox story of how the darker side of these characters are actually utilized for their heroic deeds is the main appeal. The group comprises characters like Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo, and The Invisible Man, as well as protagonist Allan Quartermain.
