Samsung Galaxy S8 Rumors and Updates: Tech Company Ditching the Flat Screen Variant? Other Specs Revealed

We Will Be Seeing More Curved Devices Next Year

If not for the Galaxy Note 7 battery pack and recall fiasco, one can safely assume that Samsung definitely had an excellent run with their smartphone lineup this year. However, the competition just gets tougher with every smartphone release, and the Korean tech giant is already looking into their next flagship, the Galaxy S8.

The Future is Curved

Samsung is reported to be mulling over the possibility of completely ditching the flat display in favor of a dual curved edge iteration. The next generation Galaxy S8 will still come in two variants though, a 5.1-inch one (the size variant where we saw a flat display with the Galaxy S7), and a 5.5-inch model. The company hopes to never repeat the Edge screen shortage issue experienced by the Galaxy S6 Edge.

It is still unclear if the dual curved display would feature the same edges as the Galaxy S7 Edge, or the steeper, subtler version found on the Galaxy Note 7. The one featured on the Note device offers more flat screen real estate, with the dual curved edges just slightly tapering off.

The move by Samsung would be made after market reception for the Galaxy S7 Edge greatly trumps the sales of its flat-screen sibling. The company already experimented with the concept of offering only the curved display variant through the Note 7. However, with the ongoing issue on the battery pack and product recall, market reception reports have already been tainted regarding the reception of this curve display exclusive device.

Samsung aims to refresh both their software and hardware experience through this innovative display technology. The unique features offered by the Edge are no doubt unique and novel, but at this point, it's still more of a gimmick than a productive feature.

Other Improvements

The Galaxy S8 will still be sporting Samsung's trademark Super AMOLED technology. The screen resolution will then be bumped to a whopping 4K. These technologies, along with the dual curved display, would guarantee a very immersive VR experience if and when users opt for it.

The iris scanner from the Note 7 will most likely trickle down to the Galaxy S8 to boost its security. The new UFS storage format introduced by Samsung in its latest microSD cards are also expected to be incorporated. Also, with the battery pack fiasco of the Note 7, significant changes and improvements are expected to be made in the battery department of the Galaxy S8.

Also, to go on par with its latest competitors such as the iPhone 7 Plus and the LG V20, the new device will likely sport a dual-lens camera setup. It is still unclear though on what the exact function of the secondary camera will be—a wide-angle option similar to the iPhone and LG offerings, or for increased detail and depth similar to its Huawei competitors.

The device will pack powerful processors, either the next generation Snapdragon 820 or Samsung's proprietary Exynos 8995. It is expected to sport 6GB of RAM with up to 128GB of internal storage. Android 7.0 Nougat will most likely run the device.
