Tesla Semi Truck vs. Daimler eCanter Specs: Which Electric Truck is Better?

American automaker Tesla is expected to unveil its first semi-truck next week. Since it is their first venture into commercial trucks, how will they fare against competitors?

Tesla is up against Mercedes-Benz' parent company, Daimler, which just launched their own electric truck last September. The semi-truck is reportedly coming with autonomous driving technology, a feature which the Daimler's eCanter does not have.

If the semi-truck really does such capabilities, it should make Tesla's truck stand out against a plethora of rivals in the industry, not just Daimler.

The addition of self-driving capabilities to the semi-truck should revolutionize how trucks operate in general. In the future, there might be no need for truck drivers. These automobiles could transport large cargo through autonomous driving technology.

In terms of range, the Tesla truck is expected to be lesser than that of the company's Model 3 sedan, which has a 215-mile limit when fully-charged. The eCanter, on the other hand, has a limit of 62 miles.

As of now, these electric trucks are not expected to come with an extensive range. More power is needed to transport heavy loads and due to restraints when it comes to size, the need for batteries to fit within the truck's frame, long hauls are not possible as of now. But the continued development of battery technology should open future possibilities of long-distance hauls.

Daimler and Tesla will most likely come close in terms of the cargo capacity. It is uncertain how much load the Tesla truck can carry but it should be close to 57,320 pounds, which is the amount of cargo that the eCanter can carry.

Both trucks come with top-tier monitoring systems that give drivers information about the need for charging, and more.

Tesla has yet to unveil their semi-truck. Further comparisons should be made when detailed specifications are announced on Nov. 16.
