Trump's week in review: Warning to Iran, Zelensky meeting, HHS probes Minn. daycare fraud
1. Trump meets with Zelensky, Putin in an effort to end Russia-Ukraine war
At a joint press conference last Sunday, Trump detailed his diplomatic discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, held at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict nears its fourth anniversary. “We have made a lot of progress on ending that war,” Trump told reporters, estimating that the process of ending the war was 95% complete.
Trump began the press conference by noting that Zelensky and Trump spoke to multiple other European leaders, including the leaders of France, Finland, Poland, Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany, along with other member nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Commission.
Zelensky also spoke at the press conference, outlining progress on “all the aspects of the peace framework.”
Zelensky said the parties had “90 percent agreed” about the 20-point peace plan and “100 percent agreed” about the “U.S.-Ukraine security guarantees” and “almost agreed” about the “U.S.-Europe-Ukraine security guarantees.”
When asked to identify “the thorniest issues still unresolved” after the meeting, Trump responded by pointing to debates over who gets control of land that has been taken during the war.
Trump replied to a reporter's question asking how long he thought it would take to bring the war to an end, estimating that “If it went really well … maybe a few weeks,” but “if it went poorly, longer” and “if it went really poorly, it’s not going to happen.”
He acknowledged that despite the progress made, “It’s possible it doesn’t happen.”
Ahead of his meeting with Zelensky, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had “a good and very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia.”
