2. Trump meets with Netanyahu, who announced plans to award him the Israel Prize
Trump appeared alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a joint press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday. There, Netanyahu announced that Israel would be awarding Trump the Israel Prize.
As Netanyahu explained, “In almost our 80 years, we’ve never awarded it to a non-Israeli.”
“This was announced formally over lunch by our minister of education, who’s responsible for the Israel Prize. It’s going to be awarded to President Donald J. Trump for his tremendous contributions to Israel and the Jewish people,” he added. “This reflects the overwhelming sentiment of Israelis across the ... spectrum. They appreciate what you’ve done to help Israel and to help our common battle against the terrorists and those who would destroy our civilization.”
Netanyahu invited Trump to accept the recognition, which he described as “an expression of thanks and appreciation,” on Israel’s Independence Day, which is May 14. Trump thanked Netanyahu, calling the award “a great honor.”
The press conference also touched upon the ongoing efforts to ensure the disarmament of the terrorist organization Hamas as part of a peace plan established to end the fighting between Israel and the terrorist organization following the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, terror attacks in the Middle Eastern nation.
“They’re going to be given a very short period of time to disarm,” Trump said. “If they don’t disarm, as they agreed to do, they agreed to it, then there will be hell to pay for them.”
