'Walking Dead' Season 8 Plot News: Tom Payne Talks About Character's Becoming a Savior

"The Walking Dead" star Tom Payne teased how his character, Jesus, is going to live up to his name as Savior in the ongoing eighth season of the post-apocalyptic zombie drama.

Since Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) waged an all-out wat against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviors, the Alexandrians along with their allies have been plotting to kill every single one of their enemies. Although Jesus is on their side, he is not on board with slaughtering the gang. He is not siding with the enemies but in a sense, he is becoming the Saviors' savior.

In the second episode, titled "The Damned," Jesus exactly proved how merciful he is towards his enemies. Even when a member of the gang pretended to be innocent only to catch him off guard, he did not kill the man. He only disarmed him and tied him up.

"When you let things fall apart during periods of war, you're walking this fine line of what is right and what is wrong," Payne told The Hollywood Reporter about his character's decision to defy the command to kill all Saviors.

"If there's no stability or humanity in them, then who is really fighting for the right cause?" he added. "For him to make that stand, I think it's really important. You shouldn't just kill everyone. You should have some kind of moralistic attitude about it."

According to Payne, Jesus will stick with his decision for a good reason. He wants to prevent his community from reaching a point of no return. He is only thinking of the future and of the society they are going to return to when all of this is over. And if they slip into such a terrible state, Jesus believes it will only become more difficult for his friends to fight off their demons.

"The Walking Dead" season 8 airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
