Trump's week in review: From the Epstein Files release to his meeting with Mamdani

5. Trump meets with NYC Mayor-elect Mamdani after calling each other 'communist' and 'fascist'

Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office Friday, just over two weeks after the self-described democratic socialist won the mayoral election in the nation’s largest city. Although the meeting was closed to the press, the two indicated that they had a positive, productive discussion in remarks to reporters after their meeting ended.

“We just had a great meeting,” Trump told reporters as he sat beside Mamdani at his desk in the Oval Office. “We have one thing in common: We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”

Trump indicated that their conversation touched upon the importance of housing and food prices, vowing, “We’re going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York.”

Mamdani characterized their meeting as a “productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City, and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers.” He identified rent, grocery prices and utilities as some of the conversation topics.

“I look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers,” he added. The geniality between the two leaders of opposing political parties and philosophies marks a stark contrast to rhetoric used during the mayoral campaign, where Trump denounced Mamdani as a “communist” and vowed to withhold federal funding from the Big Apple if the self-described democratic socialist won the election.

For his part, Mamdani called Trump a "fascist" and a "despot," and made opposition to the Trump administration a centerpiece of his campaign. His campaign website had an entire section outlining his plans for “Trump-proofing NYC.”
