5 things to know about the 2026 midterm elections
5. Ballot measures
Ballot measures in several states are expected to go before voters throughout the year.
Virginia will see multiple proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot this year. In addition to the amendment asking voters to approve a new congressional map, voters in the commonwealth will decide the fate of proposed constitutional amendments seeking to establish a right to abortion, a right to same-sex marriage and for convicted felons to have their voting rights automatically restored after they fulfill their prison sentences.
In Missouri, voters will consider whether to reverse a measure that narrowly passed in 2024 that established a constitutional right to abortion in the state. The ballot measure that will appear before voters this fall would also prohibit abortions except in cases of “medical emergency, fetal anomaly, rape, or incest,” while limiting abortions in cases of rape and incest to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and add a prohibition on the performance of gender transition procedures on minors to the state constitution.
In Nevada, voters will weigh in on a ballot measure establishing a constitutional right to abortion in the state for a second time. While the referendum overwhelmingly passed in 2024, state law requires voters to approve ballot measures twice before they can take effect.
