Education Dept. slaps 'excessive and unjustifiable fines' on Christian schools

The Trump administration claims the U.S. Department of Education targeted Christian institutions with "excessive and unjustifiable fines" while seeking to eradicate Christian values in public schools.

The report singled out the unprecedented, hefty fines levied against Grand Canyon University (GCU) and Liberty University, the two largest Christian institutions of higher learning in the U.S.

Both schools faced fines from the Education Department of around $37 million — the largest in the department's history — which dwarfed the $2.4 million fine levied against Penn State for not reporting Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of boys, as well as the $4.5 million fine against Michigan State for failing to address Larry Nassar's sexual assaults against hundreds of students.

While Liberty University agreed to pay $14 million related to alleged violations of the Clery Act, which requires universities receiving federal funding to report data of campus crime and report threats to students, the department rescinded the $37.7 million fine against GCU in May.

The department under Biden claims the school "lied about the cost of its doctoral programs to attract students to enroll" to more than 7,500 current and former students. GCU President Brian Mueller pushed back against the allegations during a 2023 interview with The Christian Post, saying the school had no intention of "paying a dime" to the federal government.

The report also mentioned the Biden administration's "book ban coordinator," an apparent reference to Matt Nosanchuk, who served in the role that was created within the department's Office for Civil Rights in 2023 to address alleged civil rights violations associated with book restrictions in schools.

The department investigated school boards that removed age-inappropriate and pornographic materials from public school libraries, according to the report, which noted such removals often came in response to religious objections from Christian parents.

During his speech this week, Trump highlighted issues in the educational system and promised guidance to allow prayer in public schools.
