5 things to know about elections this fall that could change the balance of power

3. New York City’s mayoral election
New York City, the most populous city in the United States, is slated to have a mayoral election this fall. Unlike the two gubernatorial races on the ballot, which are largely two-party contests between a Democrat and a Republican, the NYC mayoral election is a multi-candidate race.
The race was shaken up late last month as Incumbent Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who was seeking a second term as an independent, dropped his re-election bid. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary and is now running as an independent, remain in the race.
The RealClearPolitics average of polls taken since Oct. 3 shows that the winner of the mayoral election could end up capturing less than 50% of the vote in the overwhelmingly Democratic city because of the splintered field. The average shows Mamdani in the lead with 47%, followed by Cuomo at 29.8% and Sliwa at 16%.
