A Christian actress who filed a lawsuit citing religious discrimination after her firing from a lead role in a stage production for publicly expressing her views on homosexuality has received support in her case from a renowned theologian.

The 26-year-old actress, Seyi Omooba, lost her job in a theatre production of "The Color Purple" last year over a 2014 Facebook post in which she wrote that she did “not believe homosexuality is right” and people were “not born gay,” according to The Telegraph, which said she was a student in 2014, and her contract with Curve Theatre in Leicester, England, was also terminated.

The Employment Appeals Tribunal held a preliminary hearing against her former employer and agent Global Artists for breach of contract and religious discrimination on Thursday and a full tribunal will be held in February 2021, the newspaper reported.

The performer has appealed a ruling that rejected evidence she had earlier produced. Curve Theatre and Global Artists have disputed the allegations made by Omooba.

In his expert witness statement to the tribunal on behalf of Omooba, theologian Martin Parsons said that the Facebook post constitutes “a fair and reasonable expression of Christian beliefs, as those beliefs have historically been held by the overwhelming majority of the Christian church throughout history.”

The tribunal was told she was fired partly due to “the particular demography of the theatre community,” in which “LGBTQ people are a sizable proportion,” and that her former employer was “concerned about the offense taken among the community at the claimant’s post and the threats of boycott of the production.”

She was dismissed after an actor, Aaron Lee Lambert, shared a Facebook post about her views on homosexuality.

After the post, the show’s producers wrote in a statement: “Following careful reflection it has been decided that Seyi will no longer be involved with the production,” according to BBC.

The actress, who is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre, was “called a n***er for citing the Bible” after her Facebook post, her lawyers said, according to The Times.

Lloyd Evans, the theatre critic for The Spectator, who also gave expert witness testimony in the case, was quoted as saying that “it is not of any importance for an actor to agree with the ethical views or the feelings of a character in a play.” Otherwise, he added, “the art of drama would not exist, and many of the plays we regard as classics would be impossible to stage.”

“On all my social media I always post stuff about God or scriptures,” the actress, who had been due to play the lead role of Celie in the musical, explained earlier in a YouTube video. “They knew that I was Christian and they knew my stance on marriage, on my faith, on God ... on many different things that are in the Bible.”

She added, “I still can’t believe it today, there was this massive opportunity — something that I never thought I would ever even achieve — and I remember the casting director telling me ‘be very careful about where you go next because you have a very raw talent.’”

“This story sends a chilling message to Christians, not only in the theatre profession but across our society, that if you express and hold mainstream biblical views, you will be punished and will lose your career if you do not renounce your beliefs,” said Andrea Williams of the Christian Legal Centre.
