Does Glee Encourage Promiscuity?

Back at it again, Tuesday night’s episode of “Glee” gave viewers much more than show tunes and the average teen drama. The melodious teens once again casually tackled the topic of sex and may have left some wondering if the show is intentionally promoting promiscuity.

Watching “Glee,” among other teen dramas, could almost make the viewer forget the day when sex was encouraged as something within marriage. If the television show serves as a survey for the attitude of today’s teens, it seems as though just about everyone is doing it or waiting for that “special moment.” The latest episode depicted gay characters Kurt and Blaine's "first time."

Parents Television Council criticized the show for celebrating "children having sex."

"The gender of the high school characters involved is irrelevant. Teen sex is now more prevalent on TV than adult sex and ‘Glee’ is only playing into that trend. Research proves that television is a teen sexual super peer that can, and likely will, influence a teen’s decision to become sexually active. Fox knows the show inherently attracts kids; celebrating teen sex constitutes gross recklessness."

While much of the media is busy glamorizing premarital sex, I thought it’d be a great time to bring us back to reality and give some cold hard truth that is frequently ignored.

Many times committed Christians are criticized for the view of sex being within the covenant of marriage and if the criticism isn’t overt, they’re met with condescending looks that smirkingly suggest “That’s fine for you, but I’m getting the better end of the deal,” but are you, if you choose sex before marriage?

The Bible speaks of sex before marriage as a sin. To a non-Christian, so what? But the thing about sin is that it yields bad consequences and another characteristic of sin is that it often looks at the short-term pleasure and minimizes the lasting, long-term consequences.

It’s easy to look at the subject from the inside – “my” emotions and feelings at the time – but looking from the outside first, the results produced, may reveal a sobering truth.

The Center for Disease Control reports that 19 million new STD infections occur a year and sadly, nearly half of these new cases are happening to young people, particularly between the ages of 15 and 24.
