God's Only Son
Read: Matthew 1:13-17
"This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17)
God did not send someone else to accomplish his saving purposes for the whole world; he sent his Son. And to make it crystal clear to all who had ears to hear, as Jesus emerged from the Jordan newly baptized a voice thundered from heaven, "This is my Son." The ocean of God's love for us runs deep enough that he sent his Son, his only Son. God has called, and continues to call, other men and women to declare his purposes. But he sent his beloved Son to accomplish them. And by sending his Son not only does God accomplish his saving purposes for the world, but he gives us our clearest glimpse of himself. We only begin to understand who God really is in looking at Jesus.
In many Reformed churches when we celebrate communion these are among the words we hear, "Through the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ he has obtained for us a new and eternal covenant of grace and reconciliation, that we might be accepted of God and never be forsaken by him." The reason those words make any sense at all is because Jesus is God's Son. Only God's Son could complete the saving work God intends for us.
