4. Keir Starmer: 'No tears shed' over Maduro’s fall
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom had long considered Maduro illegitimate and welcomed the end of his rule.
“We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate president and we shed no tears about the end of his regime,” Starmer said in a statement.
He confirmed that the U.K. government would speak with U.S. counterparts in the coming days “to seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.”
Starmer also noted that the British Embassy in Caracas was working to ensure the safety of U.K. nationals, calling the situation “fast moving” and subject to continued diplomatic review.
His remarks combined moral approval of the outcome with caution over its geopolitical fallout.
