Persistence

Samuel 2:21-32 NIV

Asahel was persistent in accomplishing his goal. He was determined to kill Abner. Abner was the enemy. He was the head of Ish-Bosheth's army. If Asahel was the one to kill Abner, he would receive all sorts of glory for the deed. Even though Abner kept repeatedly warning him to stop, Asahel was persistent in chasing after his goal. And he finally achieved it. What were the results of Asahel's persistence? His own death and continuing conflict within David's army for years to come.

Persistence is an important quality. Persistence has been the driving force behind many, many accomplishments, both great and small. Without persistence, we wouldn't have any of the cures that have been found for disease. Without persistence, the United States and Canada and Mexico and all of North, Central and South America would never have been "discovered" by those in Europe. Without the persistence of those early explorers, these countries would not exist - at least not as we know them now. Without persistence, no one would ever quit smoking or taking drugs or lose weight. We wouldn't achieve promotions at work. None of our relationships would last. None of our children would live past the age of thirteen. And not one of us would come close to resembling Jesus.

But misdirected persistence can be destructive. Like Asahel, we can drive ever forward, seeking after a right goal for wrong reasons, or seeking after the wrong goal altogether. Blinders on and minds set on go at whatever the cost, we rush into the fray, not looking to the right or the left, doggedly pursuing something for our own selfish purposes.

If you have a goal, look at your reasons for having that goal. Are you seeking personal gratification or glory or honor for yourself? Or is your urpose to bring glory to the name of Jesus? If it's the right reason, then be persistent. Give it your all. If it's the wrong reason, drop it. Then seek a goal with the right motivation. And seek it with persistence.
