Romney and Staples' CEO Divorce: Presidential Candidate's Testimony in Divorce to be Made Public?

Mitt Romney's testimony in the case of Staples CEO, Tom Stemberg's divorce, is to be considered for public release on Thursday in open court at the Norfolk Probate and Family Court, according to new reports out.

The testimony by the Republican presidential candidate was made in 1991, and now more than two decades later it will be considered for public release in open court with TV camera crews in attendance, according to Boston.com.

Stemberg had appealed to the court on Wednesday for the hearing to be closed and to be held privately, however, the court rejected that request. The judge in the case decided to agree with the Globe, which has sought access to the impounded testimony of Gov. Romney.

Opposing Stemberg in court, was also his ex-wife, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg, who supported the release of Romney's testimony.

Speaking at the hearing an attorney for Romney, Robert G. Jones, stated that the governor had no stance on whether the testimony should be released or not and was happy for the court to decide.

Following the case more than 20 years ago all the documents concerning the divorce were impounded, and all parties to the case were made to sign a confidentiality agreement that prevents them from leaking information concerning details of the case.

However, the issue of the testimony's release has arisen because the Boston Globe is seeking the testimony to be made public.

The Globe has reported, "At the time of the divorce, Romney was the owner and chief executive of Bain Capital, a private equity firm that invested $650,000 in Staples to help the office supply company open its first store in Brighton in 1986. In total, Bain Capital invested about $2.5 million in Staples and reaped a $13 million profit when the company went public in 1989. Romney sat on the Staples board of directors."

The court is set to reconvene at 9 a.m. local time on Thursday.
