Spain will play Chile on Wednesday in a big World Cup 2014 Group B game, and amazingly if things do not go Spain's way today the reigning champions could be eliminated from the World Cup. One of the biggest upsets in the World Cup so far took place in Group B during the first round of games; Spain – many people's pre-tournament favorites to retain the World Cup – were completely taken apart by the Netherlands, suffering a 1-5 loss.

That means they come into this match up against South American team Chile, knowing they need a win if they are to give themselves a realistic chance of making it out if the group stages.

No-one expected Spain to lose in the manner they did against Holland, and many have since said the loss marked the end of an era of dominance for the Spanish in World football.

Whether those pessimistic voices are true or not remains to be seen, but if Spain put on a big performance and gain a good win here today their World Cup will be back on track.

Spain will have to erase the memories of their painful defeat just days ago, which was in fact the biggest ever loss by a defending champion at a World Cup Finals tournament.

Some optimists have pointed out that they won the World Cup in 2010 after also losing their first game - a shock defeat to Switzerland. But no one can deny the manner of their demolition by Holland will be much harder to recover from. The result was not just the result of a freak goal conceded in a tight game, but they were taken apart, and if the game went on longer they would likely have conceded even more.

Chile won their opening game against Australia 3-1 and will feel confident. They know Spain are against the ropes and if they can defeat them today, they will book their place in the Last 16. But they will also be weary of a potential backlash from the World Champions, who despite their recent loss, still have some of the best attacking talent on the planet.
