Trump's week in review: Executive orders on public education, ending child mutilation and protecting parental rights

1. Establishing an Iron Dome over the United States
In an executive order published Monday, Trump identified the “threat of attack by ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial attack” as “the most catastrophic threat facing the United States.” He made “deploying and maintaining a next-generation missile defense shield” the official policy of the U.S.
The order, titled “The Iron Dome for America,” instructs the Secretary of Defense to submit “reference architecture, capabilities-based requirements, and an implementation plan for the next-generation missile defense shield” that must include the “deployment of the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor layer” as well as the “deployment of an underlayer and terminal-phase intercept capabilities postured to defeat a countervalue attack.”
Additional requirements for the “Iron Dome of America” include the “development and deployment of capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch and in the boost phase” and the “development and deployment of non-kinetic capabilities to augment the kinetic defeat of ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks.”
Trump called on the Secretary of Defense to work with the Office of Management and Budget to submit “a plan to fund this directive,” enabling the president to review it before “finalization of the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget.” FY 2026 is scheduled to begin Oct. 1.
