Trump's week in review: Executive orders on public education, ending child mutilation and protecting parental rights

4. Combatting ‘radical indoctrination’ in public schools and promoting ‘patriotic education’

In an executive order issued Wednesday, Trump laid out steps his administration was taking to end what he described as the indoctrination of public school children with “radical, anti-American ideologies” and efforts to block parental oversight. Trump vowed to cut federal funding to any K-12 schools engaging in what he characterized as “indoctrination” with problematic viewpoints such as “gender ideology and discriminatory equity ideology.”

Trump ordered the U.S. Attorney General to “coordinate with State attorneys general and local district attorneys in their efforts to enforce the law and file appropriate actions against K-12 teachers and school officials who violate the law by” helping facilitate the “social transition” of trans-identified students without parental consent.

The term “social transition” refers to the process where trans-identified students, often with the encouragement of school officials, adopt a name that does not align with their biological sex as part of an overall desire to identify as a member of the opposite sex.

The order directed the U.S. Department of Education to “provide funding and administrative support for the 1776 Commission, to the extent permitted by the law and subject to the availability of appropriations.” As explained in the directive, the 1776 Commission was established to promote patriotic education” towards the end of Trump’s first term but was abolished by the Biden administration.

The executive order defines “patriotic education” as a “presentation of the history of America” that is grounded in “an accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling characterization of America’s founding and foundational principles” as well as “a clear examination of how the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles throughout its history,” “the concept that commitment to America’s aspirations is beneficial and justified” and “the concept that celebration of America’s greatness and history is proper.”
