1. DHS announces 55-year low in border crossings for Fiscal Year 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released a statement Tuesday announcing that fiscal year 2025, which concluded Sept. 30, saw the lowest number of apprehensions of illegal immigrants on the southwest border of the U.S. in 55 years. Fiscal year 2025 included the last three full months of the Biden administration and the first eight full months of the Trump administration.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem attributed the decline in border crossings to the immigration policies of the Trump administration. “We have had the most secure border in American history and our end of year numbers prove it,” she said. “Under President Trump, we have empowered and supported our law enforcement to do their job and they have delivered.”

Statistics shared by the Trump administration revealed just 237,565 encounters between law enforcement and illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2025, a noticeable drop from the 1.86 million such encounters during the last four fiscal years. DHS noted that most of the apprehensions in fiscal year 2025 (73%) took place during the first 111 days of fiscal year 2025, which coincided with the last 111 days of the Biden administration.

In addition to highlighting the 55-year low in border crossings, DHS stated that “September marked the fifth consecutive month with ZERO releases by the Border Patrol along the southwest border, compared to 9,144 releases in September 2024.”
