3. Trump announces trip to Israel as peace deal progresses

This past week saw multiple developments in the ongoing efforts to secure an end to the fighting between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas that has engulfed the Middle East for the past two years following the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attacks in Israel.

During a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, the terms of a peace deal were unveiled: the release of all Israeli hostages, an end to the war and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from the war-torn Gaza Strip as a new international body called the “Peace Board” takes over.

In a message posted on social media earlier this week, Trump announced that efforts to secure a peace deal had achieved a breakthrough. “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first phase of our peace plan,” he wrote. “That means that ALL of the hostages will be released very soon and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a strong, durable, and everlasting peace.”

The developments in the peace efforts coincided with Trump’s announcement that he plans to travel to Israel on Sunday. A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect Friday, with the withdrawal of Israeli troops expected to be completed within 24 hours, and the release of all 48 Israeli hostages (living and deceased) is expected within 72 hours.
