Trump's week in review: Gaza peace deal push, Quantico speech

5. Trump addresses military leaders: We will win, win, win’

Following a speech by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signaling a course change at the U.S. Department of War, formerly known as the Department of Defense, Trump addressed military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday.

While the president's remarks focused heavily on what he characterized as his foreign policy successes and reiterated his well-established preference for a foreign policy that puts America first, Trump also insisted that “America is under invasion from within.”

Trump described the threat the U.S. faces at home as “no different than a foreign enemy but more difficult in many ways because they don’t wear uniforms.” He clarified that he was talking about the surge in illegal immigration into the U.S. while stressing that “We’re stopping it very quickly.”

The president also echoed Hegseth’s remarks by signaling a renewed focus on fitness and condemning the prevalence of political correctness in the military: “We’re bringing back a focus on fitness, ability, character and strength, and that’s because the [purpose] of American military is not to protect anyone’s feelings. It’s to protect our republic, and it’s the republic that we dearly love. It’s to protect our country. We will not be politically correct when it comes to defending American freedom.”

Trump also committed to spending $1 trillion on the military in 2026, which marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

He concluded his speech by describing the military leaders gathered in the room as “great warriors” and “the best of the best,” while expressing confidence that "With leaders like we have right here in this beautiful room today, we will vanquish every danger and crush every threat to our freedom in every generation to come because we will fight, fight, fight and we will win, win, win.”
