'Apeiron' Is 'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic's' Unreal 4 Engine Remake

"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic," developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts, is getting a makeover courtesy of independent developer Poem Studios with the help of some fans of the RPG. The remake is currently in development using Unreal 4 Engine.

Titled "Apeiron," the remastered version will be adding new content, worlds, missions, HUD, inventory, items, and companions to the beloved title that released way back in 2003. Game director Taylor Trotter told Gamespot that although "Apeiron" is a remake, they wanted to add some new things that "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" didn't have.

One of the new features that Poem Studios added is the ability to switch between third-person and first-person views. The first-person perspective became available in the sequel "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords," although it was limited to just looking around the environment. This new feature was showcased during a recent Twitch livestream of "Apeiron's" gameplay. Screenshots like the above of the Endar Spire ship also use this POV.

"The functionality is already in the game and the player simply has to press their [F] key to change the POV," Trotter told Gamespot. "The screenshots are in first person because I wanted to display the surroundings, but if you catch the dev stream I cycle between the two often."

The remake is still in its early stages. Fans interested on the developer's progress can take a look at the images posted on the reboot's official site. Poem Studios is also currently accepting help from volunteers. The studio is also open to accepting donations in the future when they're done with a large portion of the game or when it's already been polished.

Fans are both glad about the remake and worried that Electronic Arts and Disney Interactive might halt the development of "Apeiron." However, the developer believes the reboot won't have legal issues, especially since it will release for free.

The "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" remake will work on top of the original game.
