'Avatar 2' News: James Cameron Making Another Pass At Scripts, Wants To Ensure Successful Sequel

Six long years have passed since "Avatar" hit the big screen and wowed millions of viewers worldwide, not to mention earning a whopping $2.78 billion in the box office. With this feather on his cap, James Cameron has been hard at work on the film's sequels, which, according to his own pronouncements, will bring three more films. According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, Cameron somewhat acknowledged that he is experiencing "more than a touch of performance anxiety the second time around."

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly through a phone interview, Cameron shared some updates about the progress of making "Avatar 2" and the rest of the sequel films of the franchise. He said that he was "in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining." In earlier reports, Cameron described his process of writing all the scripts for the second, third and fourth installments in one go so as to ensure the story's continuity.

He also added his thoughts on the design process for the films, saying that the process of refining the scripts is "in parallel with the design process." According to him, "The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set]."

Fans of the first movie can recall that the first movie was not without its hiccups, as the studio and Cameron dealt with cost over-runs, working with new technology (i.e. 3D) and subsequent delays in productions. The film almost did not see light when Twentieth Century Fox threatened to pull out their support for the movie.

Cameron seemed to assure movie fans that "Avatar 2" will be worth the wait. With expectations running high, he said that he and his team are continuously challenging themselves, especially to prove that the first movie was not a "big fluke." He said, "So we've got to deliver."

"Avatar 2" will bow in theaters in December 2017.
