'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2' News: Sequel Comes 15 Years After, Trailer Released

In what is probably the longest time between sequels of a movie, the 2000 martial arts action movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is finally getting a sequel titled "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny." The new film was made possible through Netflix and will be released through the streaming service and select IMAX theaters on February 26, 2016.

According to a report in Tech Times, the film also released its very first trailer which featured the movie's main cast members which include Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen and Harry Shum, Jr. among others. Yeoh is reprising her role as Yu Shu Lien, a female warrior, who is tasked to protect an ancient sword that is said to bring with it immense power to whoever wields it. The sword has become the object of obsession of an evil warlord thus prompting Shu Lien to get it back it at all costs. In the first film, this same sword was at the center of all the action, when the impulsive Jen (Zhang Zi Yi) tried to wield it.

The film's trailer brings back good old martial arts action to the screen, complete with amazing stunts and action-packed sword play, which was how the first film was remembered by most viewers. The sequel is directed and choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping who is also known for his work in "The Matrix" as well as several Jackie Chan films.

The original film, which was released in 2000, was directed by acclaimed director Ang Lee and was made in Mandarin and dubbed in English. It became the highest grossing foreign language film in American film history, earning around $128 million.

The sequel, on the other hand, is in English. Unlike its predecessor, this film will also be released simultaneously through the Netflix streaming service and select IMAX theaters, which has gotten some flak from theater owners. Some of the theater chains such as Regal, Cinemark, Carmike and AMC, have decided to boycott the film because of this arrangement.

Netflix, on the other hand, is confident that the film will be a hit, especially among its subscribers.
