Floyd Mayweather Fight News: 'Money May' Calls Gennady Golovkin 'Easy Work' If He Was A Natural Middleweight
Retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still confident about his skills in the ring.
"Money" Mayweather last saw action in September of last year when he fought former two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto. After a landslide unanimous decision win, Floyd Jr. announced his second retirement from the sport after two decades.
He left the sport with an unblemished slate of 49-0, with 26 victories by knockout. Despite being retired, Mayweather has remained in the radar of many fighters, both in boxing and mixed martial arts. One of the names that has been pitted against him is that of undefeated Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin.
"GGG," a natural 160-pounder, is the WBA (Super), IBF, and IBO world middleweight champion. He is also the interim WBC middleweight champion. He holds a record of 34-0, with 31 victories by knockout.
For his part, Golovkin had previously said that he is willing to drop down to 154-pounds at light middleweight for a fight against Mayweather. Mayweather had already fought at light middleweight when he faced former WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in 2013. The fight, however, was done at a catchweight of 152 pounds.
But for Mayweather Jr., he still believes that he will end up victorious against Golovkin if he was a natural middleweight fighter.
"I can barely make 147, so how am I gonna fight at 160? Triple G, not being disrespectful, but he's straight up and down, no special effects," Mayweather said in an interview with Fight Hype. "That's easy work."
"With the [Manny] Pacquiao fight, you know, 10 rounds to two, that was a blowout," he added.
Golovkin is slated to face undefeated American boxer Dominic Wade on April 23rd at The Forum in Inglewood, California, where he will be putting all of his titles on the line. He is then scheduled to face Canelo Alvarez in the fall, as the mandatory challenger for the Mexican's WBC title.
