HTC Vive VR News: VR Headset Release Delayed Again To April 2016
The release of HTC's first virtual reality headset, the Vive VR, has been delayed once again to April 2016. According to a report in Gizmodo, this is the second time that HTC has announced a delay in their first VR product. It was originally scheduled for a 2015 launch, but in August 2015, HTC said that they are looking at a Q1 2016 launch. In a blog post last December 8, however, HTC revealed that the device's commercial release has been pushed out to April 2016.
According to the company's blog post, they will be making a limited number of headsets available (around 7,000) to developers when the year 2016 starts. This is in addition to the HTC Vive Developer Kits that they have already provided to developers and content creators through their collaboration with Valve this year. They also said that pre-orders will start in February, which will lead up to a commercial release in April 2016.
Aside from this, HTC also mentioned that they are hosting a developer conference on December 18 in Beijing, as well as having second generation HTC Vive Developer Kits available during the CES 2016 which happens in Q1 2016.
The HTC Vive VR is a head-mounted VR display which HTC is co-producing with Valve Corporation. It is part of Valve's SteamVR Project. SteamVR is Valve's response to the other VR headset projects such as the Oculus Rift and the Sony PlayStation VR.
According to a report in Wareable, the HTC Vive VR has the highest resolution display among the VR headsets being developed to date. It has two 1,080 x 1,200 screens, giving it a total resolution of 2,160 x 1,200 pixels and an aspect ratio of 9:5, which is better than the standard 16:9 of the other headsets. The screen's refresh rate is said to be 90Hz which is said to be same as the Oculus Rift's rate. This refresh rate renders content at 90 frames-per-second.
