Macbook Air 2016 Release Date, Specs Rumors: New 13in, 15in Models In The Works, Coming in June 2016?

Predictions about when the next MacBook Air will be released by Apple are already numerous. Most of the rumors, according to a round-up report by Macworld UK, point to a June 2016 release or even later. In terms of the specs and design, the MacBook Air may be receiving a major refresh next year with new 13in and 15in models reportedly in the works, while the smaller 11in model may no longer be continued.

The major refresh in terms of the MacBook Air's design is said to be possible because the MacBook Air line has yet to receive any major design changes since the line was first created eight years ago. According to the report, citing a Chinese publication Economic Daily News, 2016 will bring with it a "significant update" to the MacBook Air. One such update may be its display which Apple may see fit to upgrade to a Retina display, which is already standard in most Apple devices.

In terms of the MacBook Air's internal specs, the report also speculated that it will be equipped with the latest Intel Skylake processors. It will also have new batteries, modules for cooling and USB Type-C ports.

According to another report in 9to5 Mac, new sizes of the MacBook Air will be made available, especially since Apple is reportedly discontinuing the smaller 11in MacBook Air because it is no longer practical to manufacture a model that is smaller than the MacBook and the new iPad Pro. New 13in and 15in models of the MacBook Air are said to be in development.

Among the new features that the MacBook Air may be equipped with in 2016 is the Touch ID and Force Touch technology which is already available in newer Apple devices. According to the report, the MacBook Air's trackpad may get Touch ID, the fingerprint sensor, as a security feature. Force Touch on the other hand may also be a possibility, especially after Apple added this upgrade to its 13in MacBook Pro in 2015 and is available in the new MacBook as well.
