Pokemon 20th Anniversary: 'Super Mario Maker' Adds Classic Pokemon Costumes

"Super Mario Maker" is joining the celebration of Pokemon's 20th anniversary by adding a course that offers free use of three classic Pokemon costumes.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have teamed up to mark Pokemon's 20th anniversary by launching a cross promotion with "Super Mario Maker." Clearing the newly added Event Course will allow a player to unlock three Pokemon classic costumes with matching "Red and Blue" sound effects, according to The Escapist.

The costumes included in the "I Choose You!" Event Course are Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. These were the three original starting characters in the Gameboy titles "Pokemon Red" and "Pokemon Green," which were first released in Japan in 1996, Tech Times reports.

The costume transformation starts with Mario bumping into a box that turns him into Bulbasaur. Another box releases a mystery mushroom that turns the character into Squirtle. In the later part of the same level, Squirtle will transform into Charmander, Cinema Blend (CB) explains.

Aside from that, the Event Course replaces the Super Mario sound effects with the classic sound effects from the Pokemon video game. The course is successfully completed once the player hits the flag waiting at the end of the level, the report relays.

While Charmander is not really resistant to fire in "Super Mario Maker," fans are surely delighted with Pokemon's entry into the classic game. CB has brought up the possibility of Nintendo adding more Pokemon characters into the Mario game, but it is still just a speculation at this point.

"Super Mario Maker" is a game that allows players to construct their own "Super Mario Bros." levels. The finished levels can be put online to let other players try and finish them. Over 1 million copies of the game have been sold in the United States and more than 3.34 million worldwide.

The update to "Super Mario Maker," which salutes Pokemon's 20th anniversary, is free to download.
