'The Exorcist' Season 2 Updates: Series' Newcomer John Cho Reveals Why He Accepted the Role
John Cho thinks that American-Asian actors are not as visible in American horror shows, and this is one of the reasons why he accepted the role of Andy Kim in the upcoming season 2 of "The Exorcist."
"I had not seen Asian faces in American horror, and it kind of ticked me to want to change that visual vocabulary a bit. I thought it would be, I don't know, intrusive to have my face in it," Cho said.
In an earlier interview, "The Exorcist" creator and executive producer Jeremy Slater revealed that they already had considered Cho joining the horror series even before the name of his character was decided. Apparently, "The Exorcist" was already bent on ushering Cho into the series even if the actor had not yet given his nod on being a part of the FOX horror series.
"We were writing the name John Cho on the whiteboard and going, 'Okay, in scene 6, John is going to do this.' At some point, we realized if John actually said no, we would be in a lot of trouble," Slater said.
Luckily for "The Exorcist," Cho had also been waiting for a role that he had not played in the past. Apart from his desire to make the viewers more familiar with Asian-American actors, Cho accepted the role of Andy Kim as he will be breathing life to someone who is a father figure for the first time.
To recall, it was already revealed last July that Cho's Andy Kim character is a former child psychologist who runs a group home for five at-risk foster children on a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle. When one of the children under Andy Kim's ward becomes a target of a demonic force, Cho's character will intertwine with those of Alfonso Herrera (Father Ortega) and Ben Daniels (Father Keane) as the two priests come to the rescue.
"The Exorcist" season 2 premieres on FOX on Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. EDT.
