'Tom Clancy's The Division' News: Game Draws Inspiration From 'Black Friday' Chaos, Says Developer

Fans of shooter video games are eagerly anticipating the release of Ubisoft's third-person shooter, "Tom Clancy's The Division," in March 2016. At the same time, hardcore gamers are waiting for word on when the game's open beta will happen and how to participate.

The game's developer, Massive Entertainment, recently revealed something new about the game's origins. According to Martin Hultberg of Massive Entertainment, the game is partly inspired by the chaos of the U.S.' holiday shopping season called "Black Friday." In a report in Examiner.com, Hultberg said that the game reflects on what goes on in "modern society." When the development team looked at footage of how people can go crazy over getting the latest HDTV or game controllers, they made use of this chaos as the context for the game. In "The Division," Black Friday is the day when "everything went wrong." The report noted the interesting use of this concept, because in modern times, Black Friday is also the same time that the gaming industry draws in a lot of profit.

In the same report, Hultberg also described the Dark Zone, which is one of the reasons why the game is highly-anticipated. According to Hultberg, the Dark Zone is a multiplayer zone where "nobody can be trusted." He added that because tensions and risks are high, players who succeed are well-rewarded. "The setup allows you a seamless transition between solo, co-op and player verses player. This means no lobbies or menus – it is just one unbroken experience once you start the game. The world consists of areas that facilitate these different ways of playing and you will know, and choose, when you make the transition from one to another," Hultberg said.

Before the game's released in March, Ubisoft earlier announced that the game will have an open beta sometime "early 2016." To date, no announcement has been made on when the beta is dropping, but according to a VG 24/7 report, gamers can get the code for the open beta by pre-ordering the game, registering on the game's site or following the game's official Facebook and Twitter pages for code giveaways. According to another report in Gamezone, there is a Humble Bundle available that is filled with Tom Clancy games and one of the tiers include beta access to "The Division."

"Tom Clancy's The Division" will be released on March 8, 2016 for PC, the PS4 and the Xbox One.
