'Curb Your Enthusiasm' News: On 'Thank You For Your Service' and Chet Hanks

Unlike "Saturday Night Live," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" runs deeper in terms of storylines and scripts. It is not a fragmented and act-based series. For the last nine seasons, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" has piqued its fans' interests in plotlines meant to develop beyond the surface. In its most recent episode, creator and performer Larry David took on a heavy topic about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in an episode titled, "Thank You For Your Service."

According to a critique by Entertainment Weekly, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" had notably strong episodes before "Thank You For Your Service." It helped the series come off as something that is now standing on more stable ground. However, "Thank You For Your Service" seemed too boot the show back to the surface, instead of diving into the depths of the storyline, which had a goldmine of potential to offer. The arguments that David gave was forced at best, but it seems that the unexpected hero of the episode was Chet Hanks.

"When we wrote the role of Victor, Larry always thought that Chet would be perfect for it. And when he came in and auditioned I saw that Larry was spot on," executive producer Jeff Schaffer told The Hollywood Reporter. Chet has an authenticity and vulnerability that really made the character work. And Chet definitely did research for the role and wanted to make sure his portrayal felt accurate. Well, as accurate as it could be when we were making him attack some red-coated valets.

The one strong point of "Thank You For Your Service" was Sal, who was played by actor Joe Regalbuto. His storyline managed to do what the others could not, which was to enrapture the audience in a storyline filled with thoughts and emotions that could deliver what the episode was meant to do. The Revolutionary War enactment disappointed some of the fans, but the positive side was that the production was dedicated enough to help the cast empathize with their characters.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO.
