HTC One M8 Vs. Nexus 5: Spec by Spec Comparison

The HTC One M8 was finally unveiled by the company yesterday and the new flagship device certainly continued in the footsteps of its predecessor in terms of design, much like the way the Nexus 5 did.

Google and LG stuck to the basics and made a solid phone at the end of last year with a few improvements. The HTC One M8 seemed to use this same strategy, however, it had a better blueprint in terms of software and hardware. So does last year's flagship Nexus hold up against HTC's new powerhouse? Here is a brief spec comparison of the two.

The HTC One M8 features a refined version of the metal design found on the original model. It's shinier, smoother, and wraps around the phone, eliminating any plastic on the front. This could be one of the finest looking smartphones to ever hit the market. It's also as solid and as light as the first One.

The Nexus 5 is bulkier and heavier than the Nexus 4 and features an all-black exterior that is easy to grip. However, its appearance is quite dull. LG failed to truly capitalize on the success of the Nexus 4 and chose to play it too safe. The One just has a much classier look.

Speed

The Nexus 5 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM while the HTC One M8 comes with a Snapdragon 801 with the same amount of RAM. Both devices should be extremely fast and the Nexus 5 was definitely the quickest bunch out of those to launch in 2013.

Each smartphone would have to be tested more thoroughly to find out which areas they were faster than each other in. Even with that, the speed and efficiency of both devices is most likely about even.

Software

The HTC One M8 features the all-new BlinkFeed software with Sense 6 while the Nexus 5 comes with a pure version of the latest Android OS. HTC has made many improvements to the BlinkFeed interface as users are now able to customize their feed around any single subject.

The Nexus 5's pure version of Android is certainly quick and efficient, however, this same type of integration will be available on the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition when it launches later this year.

Camera

The HTC One M8 comes with a dual-camera with 4-Ultrapixels that can capture photos in various lighting conditions. The LG Nexus 5 comes with an 8-megapixel camera and has software that features geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. Various users reported that they had some problems with the Nexus 5 camera, but many of those issues seem to have been corrected. The HTC One M8 camera still needs to prove itself, but based on the extras, it definitely has more to offer than the Nexus 5.

Conclusion

It's difficult for the Nexus 5 to have any advantage here thanks to the Google Play Edition of the HTC One M8 that will be launching soon. In terms of hardware and design, the HTC One M8 outclasses it just enough to take it in this battle. The Nexus 5 is still a great phone and comes at a reasonable unlocked price, but it's just not as impressive as the new HTC model.
