Netflix Profile Feature to Stop Parents, Kids Getting Inappropriate 'Recommendations'

Netflix is rolling out some new profile features that will allow multiple users on the same account to have their own features and distinctions in order to receive better recommendations. The change is being made to better suit the different viewers of programs on the site. For instance, if a child goes on Netflix and watched a bunch of cartoons, all the recommendations are going to be cartoons.

This will prove problematic when the parents log onto the account and are constantly recommended cartoons instead of movies or things for the adults to watch.

It works vice-versa as well. When the children go on Netflix, they will not have a rated R movie as a suggestion instead of a kids program.

"If the kids have been watching a lot of 'Shaun the Sheep,' that doesn't particularly help us help you find the next gritty drama to watch after they have gone to bed," said Neil Hunt, Netflix's chief product officer to the Associated Press.

The company says there will be no additional charge for the profile division that will allow up to five different pages.

The new Netflix will not be available on all platforms just yet. As of right now the video site confirms: iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and select smartphone models.

According to AP, Wii should be getting the overhaul by the end of August, with Android users getting it before the year ends. Netflix top box users will have to wait until next year.

Netflix says the recommendation system is what drives the site and keeps people coming back, giving them an advantage over Amazon, Hulu, and RedBox. They cite nearly three-fourths of their video watching is through that service.
