Trump's week in review: Pres. Erdogan meeting, Tylenol warning and TikTok

5. Trump announces new tariffs
In a series of posts on Truth Social Thursday, Trump unveiled new tariffs he was imposing effective Oct. 1. In one post, Trump announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on large trucks made in other countries. He contended that the tariffs will help protect “our Great Large Truck Company Manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others” from “unfair outside competition.”
In a second post, Trump announced that he was placing 50% tariffs on “all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and associated products” made outside the U.S., as well as 30% tariffs on “upholstered furniture.”
He characterized the tariffs as necessary because of “the large scale ‘FLOODING’ of these products into the United States by other outside countries,” and expressed concern about the national security implications of what he called “a very unfair practice” endangering the American “manufacturing process.”
Trump also unveiled his intention to charge 100% tariffs on “any branded or patented pharmaceutical product, unless a company IS BUILDING their pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in America.” He defined “IS BUILDING” as “‘breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction.’”
He vowed, “There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started.”
