Wes Welker of the Denver Broncos denies ever using drugs after being suspended by the NFL this week.

It was announced late Tuesday night that Welker is banned from for four NFL games after violating the league's Performance-Enhancing Drug policy. The suspension will begin during the first week of the NFL season.

"I'm as shocked as everyone at today's news," Welker told The Denver Post in an email. "I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way. Anyone who has ever played a down with me, lifted a weight with me, even eaten a meal with me, knows that I focus purely on what I put in my body and on the hard work I put in year round to perform at the highest levels year-in and year-out."

Consequent to the ruling, rumors have swirled surrounding Welker, who is an outspoken Christian. Some reports indicate the wide receiver tested positive for Adderall, while others suggested he had taken Molly, also known as MDMA which contains amphetamines.

"I wouldn't have any idea where to get Molly or what Molly is," Welker noted, according to the Denver Post. "That's a joke. I don't do marijuana, I don't do drugs. I don't do any drugs."

Meanwhile, on his website, Welker wrote a testimony of his faith which revealed that he and a group of friends study the Bible together on a regular basis. The athlete also discussed the challenges of being a Christian in the NFL.

"Friends have had a huge impact on my life, both in football and in my relationship with God," he penned. "Staying true to my faith in this league is tricky, but it helps knowing I can always count on my friends and God for support," Welker concluded.

The 2014 NFL season kicks off this Thursday, Sept. 4 with the Green Bay Packers playing the Seattle Seahawks.
